Macdonald Baseball - Fair Play Guide

Macdonald Baseball - Fair Play Guide

Mission Statement

The primary goal of the Macdonald Minor Ball Association is to promote and support the development of all players within the organization. We are committed to treating every player with respect and dignity as valued members of their teams.

Objective

The purpose of this document is to provide coaches with guidelines for treating players fairly and ensuring that all players receive reasonable opportunities for development throughout the baseball season.

Our Core Principles (Apply to All Ages & Levels)

These shared principles guide every team in Macdonald Baseball, from 9U through 18U and across both A and AA programs.

  1. Every Player Matters - All players deserve meaningful opportunities to participate, learn, and contribute.

  2. Balanced Participation - Coaches work toward balanced and meaningful playing opportunities for all players, while considering attendance, effort, safety, and team needs. Fair play is not the same as equal play.

  3. Development Over Results - The primary focus of the program is the development of fundamental skills, confidence, and a lasting enjoyment of the game. Competitive success is viewed as a natural outcome of this development.

  4. Respect & Positive Behaviour - Players, coaches, umpires, and families treat each other with respect. Sportsmanship is expected at all times.

  5. Effort & Commitment - Regular attendance, trying your best, and being ready to learn and contribute to a positive team environment.

  6. Safe, Supportive Environment - We create a space where players feel comfortable trying new things, making mistakes, and growing at their own pace.

  7. Team-First Mindset - Individual development is valued, but team success, shared responsibility, and supporting one another take priority.

Pitching Development Across Ages and Levels

Pitching is a long-term developmental skill, and teams benefit from having several players who can contribute on the mound throughout the season. Pitch-count rules make this especially important: no single pitcher can carry a team, and having multiple capable pitchers becomes critical when several games are played over two or three days, such as during playoffs or provincials. At the younger ages—particularly 11U, where players experience live pitching for the first time—all players should be given the opportunity to try pitching at least once. If players are interested in developing pitching skills, and it is safe for them to do so, coaches are strongly encouraged to present them with opportunities to develop their pitching skills. Success will vary, and that’s expected. Some players may feel unsure or prefer not to pitch, but they should still be offered the chance in a supportive, low-pressure environment. The goal at this stage is exposure, confidence, and keeping future options open.

As players move into the older ages, pitching roles begin to take shape based on safety, readiness, and developing skill. Coaches are encouraged to continue building depth by giving multiple players opportunities to pitch, while also recognizing that some players may naturally take on more consistent roles.

Batting Order Approach

At the younger ages (9U/11U), using a rotating, continuous batting order during the regular season is strongly encouraged. This approach helps ensure balanced opportunities, keeps players engaged throughout the game, and supports a positive developmental environment.

During playoffs/provincials, and as players advance through age groups and into higher levels, coaches may choose to adjust the batting order based on readiness, effort, and team needs. This may include more strategic lineups or role-based batting positions.

How Fair Play Evolves Across Age Divisions

9U - Learning the Game

  • Equal playing time for all players.

  • Rotation through all defensive positions (safety permitting).

  • Equal at bats and varied batting order.

11U - Building Skills & Understanding

  • Close to equal playing time for players with good attendance, effort, and behaviour.

  • Rotation through infield and outfield; exposure to several defensive positions throughout the season (safety permitting).

  • Close to equal at bats.

13U - Expanding on Skills and Understanding to more Advanced Baseball

  • Players begin to show clearer strengths but still benefit from trying multiple positions.

  • Playing time and batting order remains fair and balanced, with growing consideration for readiness, effort, and team expectations.

15U - Growing Competitiveness & Responsibility

  • Players may begin settling into more consistent positions.

  • Playing time and batting order remains fair and balanced, with growing consideration for readiness, effort and team expectations.

18U - Preparing for the Next Stage

  • Positions and roles are more specialized.

  • Playing time reflects readiness, effort, and team needs.

  • Coaches support players in refining advanced skills and game strategy.

A Note on Levels of Play and Regular Season vs. Playoffs/Provincials

While this guide outlines our overall approach to fair play, it’s important to recognize that a team’s coaching strategy naturally evolves over the course of a season. In regular league play, especially in the younger age groups, the focus is on giving players opportunities to learn different positions, gain confidence, and experience the game from multiple perspectives. As the season progresses, teams often become more structured, with players settling into roles that reflect their strengths, readiness, and comfort level.

During league playoffs or provincials, the approach may shift further toward fielding the most competitive lineup available. This can mean more defined positions, strategic batting orders, and decisions based on team needs in a competitive environment. The degree of this shift varies by age group and whether a team is playing A or AA, but the underlying goal remains the same: balancing development with an enjoyable and rewarding team experience.

How to Raise a Concern Respectfully

If a parent or player has questions or concerns about playing time, positions played, or anything that feels out of step with the principles in this Fair Play Guide, we encourage open, respectful communication.

Macdonald Minor Ball Association requests that parents and players observe the 24 Hour Rule when communicating with their coach.  This rule requires parents and players to wait at least 24 hours after a game or practice before contacting a coach to discuss negative issues, complaints, or playing time. This "cooling-off" period allows emotions to settle, ensuring conversations are calm, rational, and productive. After that, the first step is to contact the coach at an appropriate time — never during or immediately after a game — to discuss the situation calmly and constructively.

Coaches are expected to explain their decisions in a way that reflects team needs, player development, attendance, effort, and safety. If concerns remain after that conversation, families can raise the issue with the age-group convenor. The goal is always the same - to work together in a positive, solutions-focused way that keeps the experience enjoyable and development-focused for every player.
